Propaganda and Persuasive Techniques
If you would persuade, you must appeal to interest rather than intellect.
-Benjamin Franklin, American writer, statesman, and scientist
(1706-1790)
Although Benjamin Franklin believed that persuading individuals using what interests them was the most effective way to persuade, in some ways he was wrong!! When we write persuasively, we want to persuade our audience that our ideas are valid. In order to persuade effectively, we need to focus on logical arguments. Logical arguments are arguments that are supported by facts and statistics. It was Aristotle that first came up with the term logos….the root word to logic. Aristotle claimed that logos were truths that were so pure that they could not be argued. From logos came the word logic, which essentially means the ability to consider circumstances without involving emotion (pathos) or personal involvement (ethos).
Knowing when we are being persuaded by arguments that are NOT logical, is important. When we can recognize these non-logical arguments, we can avoid using them in our writing. Often, arguments that are not based in logic are considered ‘Propaganda techniques or Persuasive tactics’ and do NOT represent pure argumentative writing.
